James Cromwell earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance as Farmer Hoggett in the international smash Babe, reprising his role in the hit sequel, Babe, Pig in the City. Cromwell recently wrapped the upcoming streaming feature Rebel Ridge alongside Don Johnson, James Badge Dale and Aaron Pierre for director Jeremy Saulnier, and the Rafaella De Laurentiis/Universal family feature Prancer: A Christmas Tale. He is featured notably in the Steven Spielberg/Universal blockbuster Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, opposite Meryl Streep in The Laundromat for Steven Soderbergh, and starred in Reggie Hudlin’s period drama Emperor alongside Bruce Dern and Ben Robson. He earlier appeared in feature films including The Promise alongside Oscar Isaac and Christian Bale; in Marshall alongside Chadwick Boseman and Sterling K. Cromwell has been twice nominated for an Emmy Award for HBO’s Succession opposite Brian Cox, and he won a 2013 Emmy Award for his turn opposite Jessica Lange and Lily Rabe on American Horror Story: Asylum. He is seen starring opposite Colin Farrell in the limited series Sugar. He recurred last year on the cable series Julia opposite Sarah Lancaster, and on Law & Order: Organized Crime alongside Ellen Burstyn and Chris Meloni. He also was seen in two very different season-long arcs concurrently: Berlin Station opposite Richard Jenkins and Counterpart opposite J K Simmons. He earned multiple Emmy Award nominations for the cable series Six Feet Under, cable movie RKO 281, and the broadcast drama ER. Other notable television includes his star turn opposite Lee Pace on Halt & Catch Fire, the cable miniseries The Young Pope opposite Jude Law and Diane Keaton, and two seasons on the cable comedy The Detour playing Jason Jones’ mysterious, wily father-in-law. Additionally, he starred on the TNT/Steven Bochco series Murder in the First, as Andrew Mellon on the cable series Boardwalk Empire, in the broadcast series Betrayal, and in FOX’s long running 24, where he portrayed Jack Bauer’s father Phillip Bauer. Cromwell’s many stage appearances include the 2020 Broadway production of Bess Wohl’s Grand Horizon alongside Jane Alexander and Michael Urie; the Centennial CTG/Los Angeles production of Waiting for Godot; productions of Hamlet, The Iceman Cometh, Devil's Disciple, All's Well That Ends Well, Beckett and Othello, in many of the country's most distinguished theatres, including the South Coast Repertory, the Goodman Theatre, the Mark Taper Forum, the American Shakespeare Festival, Center Stage, the Long Wharf Theatre and The Old Globe. He played A. E. Houseman in the American premiere of Tom Stoppard's The Invention of Love at A.C.T. in San Francisco and in fall 2014, he played Rupert Murdoch in David Williamson’s controversial play Rupert at Theatre Royal in Sydney, Australia. Cromwell has directed at resident theatres across the country and was founder and artistic director of his own company, Stage West, in Springfield, Mass.
